This book contains thirteen case studies of successful mobile robot systems. These robot systems were carefully chosen; they represent the best available implementations by leading universities and research laboratories. Many of the robots have distinguished themselves (usually with first- or second-place finishes) at various indoor and outdoor mobile robot competitions. These are not robots that simply work in the laboratory under constrained conditions. They have left the lab and been tested in natural and unknown environments. They have all demonstrated their robustness many times over.

The robot systems in this book perform many different tasks, from giving tours to collecting trash. However, many common themes are apparent throughout the book including navigation and mapping, computer vision, and architecture. Each case study is self-contained and describes a complete robot system. As such, the reader will have many complete mobile robot systems from which they can pick and choose the technologies that they might want to try on their mobile robot. Each case study includes detailed descriptions of important algorithms, including pseudo-code. Thus, this book serves as a recipe book for designing successful mobile robot applications.
