This volume contains the articles that appeared in volumes 1 through 5 of the AI Magazine, covering the years 1980 through 1984. AAAI was a much smaller organization during those years than it is now, so that most of the present members did not receive those early issues. The purpose of this collection is to make available, in one convenient place, the principal material that appeared in those volumes (i.e., the feature articles, but not Research in Progress reports, book reviews, announcements or letters). We hope that this republication provides a useful service not only to our members but to libraries and historians.
